For BORA magazine, writer Martin Fraas visited the Lietke family in their home, a beautifully restored small villa, in the capital. The visit was photographed by Hunger & Simmet GmbH.
For the Lietke family, the kitchen is the heart of their home. This is where the family meets; it's a place for discussion, where decisions are made. Its core purpose of cooking and enjoying food is transformed into a lively communication centre. That's why, during the planning stage, it was important to Nicole and Bernd Lietke that the kitchen was integrated into the living area, with minimal barriers that might impede access or visibility. It's clear that their vision has been well-realised.

In 2016 the Lietkes moved from Ulm to Berlin with their children Mia and Jonas, and moved into their new home: a small villa built in 1936, elegantly restored.
"The building had not been renovated for over 50 years and had to be refurbished completely," says Bernd. "However, we tried to preserve as much of the original structure as possible — and with it, its unique style and charm." The result is a house that is flooded with light: homely, modern, with a tendency towards purism; yet it does not deny its history.
"It is characteristic of the importance of our kitchen that we focused on it first," reveals Nicole. "During the renovation, we practically designed the house around the kitchen."
Whoever visits the Lietke home immediately feels a positive and relaxed mood, a harmony that is actively lived every day. "Shared meals are important for family bonding," says Nicole. "Whenever possible, we preserve this tradition."
And the division of responsibilities is also clear. Bernd, a successful manager in his professional life, willingly submits at home to 'the boss', as they refer to Nicole. Jonas, who at the age of 13 is already a virtuoso hobby chef, is allowed to assist her with the cooking. The menu often includes Italian dishes that everyone in the family loves. "But there is also classic German home cooking like spätzle, schnitzel and maultaschen," says Nicole.
"Equipping the kitchen with a BORA system gave us maximum design freedom."
